"Poppies for D" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting on paper

Yes, more poppies!  Experimental for me, as watercolor always is and will be (hard to control the water part of it!), I started this painting in Rome and finished it in Fort Collins, having a great time in the meantime!  More coming, as I really do enjoy playing with the colors and the ink outlines.

"Seaside Moon" by Karla Nolan, 8"x10" palette knife oil painting

Many moons ago (no pun intended!), I visited my dear friend Missy in Newport, Rhode Island.  We went to a golf club for dinner that had quite the view, very reflective as the sun descended over the water.  This is my attempt to capture a sliver of time during that sundown.  I like it.  I hope you do, also.  By the way, I do not play golf, have no ambition to do so, as I know how my right arm would hate me, it already does from painting!

"Lilac Skies, Full Moon and Mountains" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

A return (again!) to the Lunar-tique series.  I had a very difficult time capturing the colors of the sky while photographing this particular artwork but finally feel that they are representative of this piece.  It's always hard to get exactly the right shades for the skies and incorporate other elements accurately but I didn't go for accuracy with this moon.  I prefer the imagination!

"Near Najac, France" by Karla Nolan, watercolor painting (unmatted)

It was May of 2013, a very difficult time in life as my father had passed away.  We escaped to France.  May is poppy month and we were fortunate enough to be able to view the many coquelicot fields around this little village, Najac.  Seeing these happy hills of red soothed my shattered nerves a bit.  Looking back, I recall the emotions of losing a beloved person, those feelings never leave.  But France helped.

"Papaveri Trio" by Karla Nolan, matted watercolor and ink painting

Yup, still at it with the watercolor and ink paintings.  My neck hates me, though.  I am more accustomed to standing, hopefully straight, and painting with a palette knife on canvas.  I just have been enjoying this media, remembering my dad's passion for painting with watercolor and ink, not the same subject matter, but the memories are great.  And you know me, I can't get enough of bright red poppies!

"Italy: Cypress and Poppies" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting

Fond memories of Italy again, irresistible!  I cannot speak the Italian language except for basic phrases (grazie, prego, bellissima) and, while I can remember an occasional phrase for a short while, I have all but given up learning this Latin based lingo.  However, my friend Patrizia is encouraging me to learn a bit more and I'm enjoying a book or two written by Tim Parks (an English gentleman who has lived and worked in Italy for 30 years) in which I can pick up a phrase here and there.  The moral of this story:  (1) never give up on learning something new and (2) visit Italy, for goodness sakes, do you know what you are missing?

"Roman Holiday Poppies" by Karla Nolan, matted watercolor and ink painting

There's no better time than the present, or so I thought while staying recently in Italy.  I picked up those watercolors and ink pens, put my mind to it, and produced these poppies.  Quite a switch from my recent lunar mindset, eh?  What fun I had!
