"Down in the Valley" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Driving south to Salida, along the Collegiate Range, I couldn't help but notice the houses nestled below the foothills and mountains.  This was during the fall, the colors were just beginning to turn, and I wondered, what would it be like to live down in that valley?  This question will never be answered, as I have no plans to move anytime soon, but to me it's the sort of place that so many visitors to Colorado just dream about owning!

Well, we quickly went from fabulous Fall to wild Winter here in norther Colorado!  Whew!  Why do changing leaves just need to be red, yellow, orange or brown?  Why not aqua or turquoise?  Huh?  Had fun, fun and more fun with this one -- check out the real leaves pressed into the paper....

Just less than a week until autumn officially begins.  Hard to believe, this summer has flown by!  The pansies will thrive for a little while longer, thankfully.  These were not the easiest to paint, the colors varied so much in the petals.  They are a fine reminder of warm weather, I believe.

"Autumn Leaf Storm" unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

Well, it appears that the weather has been influencing my art work as of late...  About a week ago the wind just howled at night, the autumn leaves were furiously dropping from trees, and then the thunderstorm hit!  Our honey locust tree ash has grown tremendously since we moved into this house and it was slamming into the siding, keeping me awake much of the night.  Naturally, I thought I should definitely "document" the event.

"Hello, Morning Glories!" framed miniature palette knife/brush oil painting

We are in autumn now in northern Colorado, but it is still warm during the day.  I have even seen some morning glories in bloom, which is amazing for mid-October, wouldn't you say?  As much as I enjoy the blooms of the morning glories, I cannot grow them to save my life in our garden.  Obviously, there's something greater going on here, right?  I must be destined to merely paint them!  That's not so bad a deal now, is it?

"Red Mountain Colorado Fall" by Karla Nolan, palette knife, brush, oil painting

 

Okay, I'll be brutally honest here.  I have painted this scene before, a number of times, in fact.  I never tire of it.  Between Silverton and Durango, Colorado, sits Red Mountain Pass.  My husband and I went through here in the mid-1970s and have been here since that long time ago.  The falls here in the Rocky Mountains are different from Back East.  The aspens tends to flutter around in their vibrant gold and yellow tones, rarely orange or red, but that does occur occasionally.  The skies are bright blue, the underbrush turning hues of ochre.  I love this time of year, be it on the plains, the foothills, or the mountains of my sweet state.  I hope you get the feeling of autumn, before the high piles of snow, blizzards, and cold just around the bend.
