"Maui Beach Surf and Clouds" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

My husband and I traveled to Hawaii some years ago and stayed on the island of Maui.  There is just nothing in the world more soothing to me than the pounding of the ocean as the waves crash heading to the shore.  When I painted this miniature, my travel memories kicked in and there I was, lying on the beach once again, blissed out by the incredible sounds.  Ah, gotta love the ocean!  (I am, of course, landlocked in my own paradise, but painting revives the good memories...)

"Ecstasy" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

One might say that I am ecstatic about sunsets, as shown in the above painting, "Ecstasy".  No two are alike for any day or any amount of time in the day, just a quick, split second in time.  And since I live so close to the Rocky Mountains, the Continental Divide, I love the mountains just below the clouds!

"Green Hills of Ireland", 9.5"x13" original watercolor painting

There are so many shades and hues of green in Ireland, I don't believe that one could name them all.  Accompanied by the grey clouds overhead, there are subtle, rolling hills, walls of stone separating lots, quaint old houses surrounded by bushes and trees, wildflowers growing in the green (!) meadows.  What glorious memories I have!

"Sunset Waves", 4"x12" unframed palette knife oil painting

There just is nothing much more satisfying than seeing a sunset over the Rocky Mountains here in Colorado.  They are favorites for painting material, of course, and I just never grow weary of them.  You never know what you'll see and it occasionally seems to be raining color!

"Blues Skies", 36"x36" unframed palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas

Well, this is a biggie -- 3 feet by 3 feet, painted primarily in blue hues.  Hence, the name.  The clouds in Colorado are so beautiful, so numerous with the varying shades of the blues in the background, they light up everything!  Ready to hang, no need to frame unless you want to.

"Busy Night Skies", 4"x12" unframed palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas

My take on painting in any medium is this:  have fun!  Don't take yourself too seriously.  Experiment.  Try not to stress (good luck with that!)..

"Busy Night Skies" is my interpretation in palette knife oils of what any given moment in the skies -- moon shimmering through the clouds, possible lightning strikes occurring, clouds rolling in, satellites blipping over the landscape.  And of course it all occurs over my beloved Rocky Mountains!  I had fun!

"Furioso (Furious)", 4x12" unframed palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas

This is the sort of sunset I'm used to seeing in the summer evenings here in northern Colorado.  Sometimes it almost seems as if the clouds have their own personalities, whirling about in the atmospheric winds overhead.  Bright, bold colors with blue hues, hints of turquoise, the silhouette of the foothills leading to the Rocky Mountains, the Continental Divide, the backbone of North America.  Am I a lucky girl or what???

"Moon at Midnight", unframed palette knife oil painting

Yes, I am at it again, another night sky scene.  There is always so much happening in those dark skies, the moon shining, the stars shooting, the hint of a possible storm.  I am most intrigued, as I hope you are, also, by the mystery of the night!

"Feroce (Fierce))", 4"x4" unframed miniature palette knife oil painting

This is a fierce sunset, the sort that just glows at you, reminding you that the day has ended, it may have been a tough one, but you carry on, nonetheless.  Or at least that's my take on this painting.  Yup, some days are like that!

"Fuoco (Fire)", 4"x12" unframed palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas

John Denver wrote about the fire in the sky and I've seen it occurring here in Colorado many times over the Rocky Mountains silhouette.  A brilliant red at one point in the sundown, it is surrounded by oranges, yellows, turquoise (if you look hard) and blues and just absolutely captures the emotions.

"Blue Moon", unframed palette knife oil painting

I noticed the other night that we had a full moon.  It was just before our snowstorm struck, yet again delaying Spring.  Weather is rarely dull here in Colorado; wait 20 minutes, it'll change.  Then I started thinking about the "blue moon" -- two full moons in one month.  I have no idea if this is the month for such an occurrence but I am enraptured with painting moonscapes.  They are just so much fun!  Here's one for you....

"Rocky Mountain Sunset: Clouds in Motion", unframed palette knife oil painting

Well, it's time of year again, amazing northern Colorado sunsets to view.  It's easier with Daylight Savings Time, dinner's finished and I can out my front door and see incredible sights.  The clouds move quickly some evenings and that's inspiring -- can me if you can!

"Glowing Clouds Near Seattle", 6"x4" miniature palette knife oil painting

I've only been to the northwestern part of the United States one time, but it was an impressive region to visit.  Luckily, it was springtime so there were some warm days.  I did notice how the clouds could just hang on one in Seattle, very unlike my beloved Colorado.  I'm so accustomed to blue skies and reddish/brown earth -- well, this terrain had floaty light grey or blue skies and the waters of the Pacific Ocean.  Delightful seafood, great sounds -- and, oh, by the way, did I mention some beautiful and inspiring sunsets?

"Newport Harbor Dusk", miniature palette knife oil painting

Okay, I'll admit it, I had more fun with this miniature palette knife oil painting than I expected to have.  There is, in person, an almost iridescent glow in the sky, the boats are bouncy, and the water is serene with a little bit of oomph.  This is the fond memory I had of one of the evenings I spent with my dear, dear friend, Missy, in Newport, Rhode Island, some years ago.  Nothing like a sunset, is there?

"Imagination at Dark", palette knife oil painting

Palette knife painting has been a joy for me lately.  I've been experimenting with different subjects, concentrating mainly on sunsets, skies, travel memories, and landscapes.  Night scenes are not new to me.  However, I haven't painted them for quite a while, so I'm presently working on a series of the skies at dark.  Be sure to click on the photo to see an enlargement, as they can appear to be quite "cosmic"!
