It was May of 2013, a very difficult time in life as my father had passed away. We escaped to France. May is poppy month and we were fortunate enough to be able to view the many coquelicot fields around this little village, Najac. Seeing these happy hills of red soothed my shattered nerves a bit. Looking back, I recall the emotions of losing a beloved person, those feelings never leave. But France helped.

"Poppy Field Near Aveyron, France" by Karla Nolan, matted watercolor painting

I've been flipping between watercolor painting and painting onto glass lately. It's not that I can't make up my mind, I rather enjoy the variety. I know some folks say "stick with one genre or medium" but that's simply not in my nature. It's educational, at least for me, to go back and forth and even sparks my imagination and experimentation! Yes, it's yet another poppy painting, and yes, it's another painting of France, but, hey, why not? Can you have too much of a happy flower or lovely country (along with Italy, of course, and, while I'm at it, Israel, England, Wales, Ireland....need I say more?)

A number of years ago my husband and I traveled through the Loire Valley to visit Amboise. We settled in to our tiny room, rested from the ordeals of the car travel, and prepared to dine. As we were walking towards our restaurant, the sun was just beginning to slip behind the river. With patience and persistence, we saw the magnificent results of another day, reflections above and below the water line.

"Wisteria in Shadow", miniature palette knife oil painting, france, floral

This flowering vine is so intriguing to me. My home state of Colorado is too cold to grow it successfully, but I have seen it in bloom in Rhode Island, California, France, and Italy and am mesmerized by it. The purple shades of the flower are almost white, then lilac, then lavender, the petals dripping down the multicolored green leaves, with heavy shadows and then punctuated with sun facing, almost lime hued leaves giving a stark contrast to the shaded areas of the vine. This is a miniature painting which, if matted with linen and framed with darker tones, becomes more of at statement, a "bigger" painting -- or just simply put the unframed artwork on a small wood or metal easel, it'll fit in anywhere!

"Country Houses, Burgundy, France", framed pastel painting, sale

I am going through some older artworks and putting them on sale occasionally, as I need more wall space in my small art studio so, hopefully, you will benefit from my decluttering mode! My husband and I have visited Burgundy, the wine region in France, a couple of times and I have always marveled at the architecture of the country houses, the flowers and natural landscaping surrounding the red tiled roofed abodes. This pastel painting is framed as shown and takes me back to some more of my travel memories. Does it look familiar to you?

Oops, she's at it again, painting the red poppies against a blue sky with a palette knife! Irresistible for travel memories to spring into action after working on these coquelicot (French), papaveri (Italian). It's always nice to go and see these little babies in the wild fields of France or Italy in May and June, swaying in the wind. Bringing smiles to my face.

"Red Poppy Field in Aveyron (France)", palette knife oil painting

Springtime in France brings opportunities for me and my camera and potentially my paintings. Whenever we drive the roads, I am on heightened alert, my antennae are up, seeking out the crimson fields, the coquelicot in full bloom. Fortunately, we find them in May in France and in Italy. Sometimes we drive in circles, looking for the best angles from which to photograph them so I can translate the flowers to paint upon returning home to Colorado. This field was beautiful, in southwestern France, a hilly part of the land. I reminisced when I used the palette knives, moving the oil painting around on the panel. Ah, I love vacations!

Another framed painting on glass, this of multiple red poppies in a silver framed, soft blue skies hovering in the background. Poppies are a lot of fun to paint most days, but can be frustrating. Remembering to paint in a loose manner helps, but that's easy enough to forget as you're in the midst of the action! May seems to be the best blooming time in Europe for these happy campers, summer and hot months make them thrive in Colorado. They also enjoy poor soil! Good thing, our soil has clay in it!

"Vegetable Stand, Gordes, Provence, France" by Karla Nolan, palette knife, brush, oil painting

There is nothing like fresh produce. Grown in the region, picked at the height of ripeness -- I enjoy going to the local farmers' markets during the warm months around here in northern Colorado. Can you imagine my delight when we went to Provence, France, specifically Gordes this day, and saw this absolutely incredible vegetable stand just waiting for the picking and photographing? Lavender, eggplants, different types of tomatoes, fennel, onions, and so on....yum, a meal in the making, both in the kitchen and in the art studio. This painting honestly took at eternity to paint and I learned much by trial and error. I hope you enjoy viewing it as much as I did painting it! Au revoir for now!
