"Pink Water Lily", original watercolor painting

We live in what I call "a little slice of Paradise", Fort Collins, Colorado.  This sweet town has all sorts of horticultural delights including a huge test garden, Colorado State University Horticultural Department, multitudes of greenhouses and gardens.  But one of my favorite spots to visit is The Gardens on Spring Creek, less than two miles from our house.  This past summer I did a solo tour through the Gardens and found this sweet pink water lily, just floating along.  Here it is for you to ponder.  I enjoyed painting it and learned a few lessons about watercolor painting as the painting progressed.  It is one tough medium!

"Hot Hot Hot", original matted watercolor painting

We were in northern California recently, specifically Sonoma.  What a sweet town, you should visit it, really!  I slid into the alley off the main square and returned to see the bouganvillea I saw a few years back.  Still blooming away, still impossible to paint, but easy to photograph.  So, my approach here is catch the color.....that's what it's all about, isn't it?  "Life is short, use color!" is my motto.  What's yours?

"Inspired by the Hydrangeas of Wales", unframed palette knife oil painting

Yes, I AM part Welsh!  My mother's family came from a tiny town near Aberystwyth, a university town, and my husband, two daughters and I have been to visit our distant relatives, one time meeting my father there, also, he loved the Welsh relatives...with good reason.  Whilst there (don't I sound fancy!), I had the pleasure of viewing many beautifully hued hydrangeas blooming in a garden in Tenby, in the month of July, no less.  It was much cooler than we had anticipated, the weather was much like that of Scotland, cool, misty, foggy, and green, with a great deal of sheep and lambs about..  I loved it!  And my relatives there are wonderful, I hope we do get to see them again.  (I am also Jewish, so you can imagine how difficult life is with the native languages, Hebrew and Welsh, virtually impossible for me to learn either.  Oh well.)

"Impromptu Ballerina Rose Bouquet", 14"x11" unframed palette knife oil painting

I studied oil painting with Daniel Edmondson some time ago, a marvelous teacher and fine person.  He paints the most beautiful still life paintings, something I never felt I could even approach with a brush or palette knife.  I was inspired, however, more than I knew, to attempt a more "rugged" or less refined painting recently, with the thought of the pink ballerina rose bush planted in front of our house as the subject matter.  Dan has a more representational approach and I just tend to abstract my realism, as you can see!  (I might add here, he teaches some amazing painting classes via DVDs, you might want to check into these....he's on Facebook with more information....)

This is a slightly older palette knife oil painting I have always been fond of but no longer have room for it on my (tiny) studio wall, so I priced it as a bit of a bargain.  It is already framed and would be a lovely addition to any room, it could fit right over that nightstand by the antique lamp you've been trying to make into a fitting vignette!

"Lobelia in Terra Cotta, Yemin Moshe, Jerusalem" by Karla Nolan

Back to Jerusalem in May.  Yemin Moshe is the section of the city in which we stayed and it's a floral paradise, especially in the spring before it becomes very hot.  I walked around, camera in hand, ready to document all of the beautiful foliage I saw.  Lobelia tend to attract me, especially, probably due to the range of colors available and I saw all the hues there were!  The old stones on the walkways and the exterior of the dwellings only added to the lush effect.  The people living in this area take great pride in their container gardens and olive trees and bougainvillea also abound.  Avissar House, our studio apartment for the better part of a week, is a seven minute walk to Jaffa Gate and I would truly urge you to make the trip to this historic part of the world!

"Dazzling Dahlia" by Karla Nolan, palette knife, brush oil painting

Flowers are so much fun and yet so challenging to paint.  We've only grown dahlias here and there, in fact it's been years since we've planted them in our garden.  Now that I've finished this painting, I may just have to look into making this effort again, as I fell in love with all the colors in this particular flower.  More dreams of spring, although it's not even winter.  Can you tell my favorite season?
