Peek A Boo Iris, palette knife oil painting

Spring must be around the corner, it just has to be! I am so ready to see fresh flowers rising from the ground -- crocus, daffodil, forsythia, iris, whatever! While I like florist shops just fine, there's nothing quite like walking outside and being surprised daily by what is springing forth from the ground.

This is a palette knife oil painting, no brushes to muddy up my colors here. You should try it sometime -- put aside those brushes, just use knives for cleaning the palette or for painting. It's hard but fun!

Sunny Day in Capitol Reef (Utah), palette knife oil painting

Beautiful Utah. We live right next door to it. Red earth. Blue skies. Desert. High plains. Canyons. A number of national parks. You absolutely must visit this place! It's like another planet, absolutely marvelous, very unreal compared to many parts of the U.S. A hiker's paradise. Capitol Reef is often, unfortunately, overlooked, but being overlooked doesn't mean it's a bad thing. When we were there, it almost felt like we had it all to ourselves. You'll love it!

Tranquility, palette knife oil painting

Once in a while, it's just plain old peaceful in the sky, at dusk, twilight, sunset. I played and played with this painting -- tiny little palette knives here on the canvas. Had a great time making it, too!

I love the volatility of colors in the Rocky Mountain sunsets much of the time -- but sometimes you just need to give it a rest. The sky does that, anyway, so I played it all down -- and had a lovely time doing so. Serenity. Peace. Quiet. Something we all need occasionally. I don't necessary thrive on it, but when it happens, I appreciate it. Tranquility.

Pastel Sunset, pastel painting

This is, admittedly, a pastel sunset. I mean that in two ways: it is painted with soft pastels and also in pastel colors. Every once in a while I want to zoom in on a sunset and see the details, but of course they are so fleeting! I see contrails from the airplanes occasionally and see all shades of pinks, blues, corals, yellows -- even shades of purple! This is is a bit more abstract than I usually paint, thus a different bit of a style to show you!

You know what? My Circadian clock is different from my family's. I struggle to get up in the morning. It's torture for me. Thus, sunsets are my specialty. Loving Iris Duo, painting on glass

Valentine's Day is almost here and I cannot resist the irises these days. Boy, are they difficult to paint, though! Flaky little flowers with all of those frills and folds! I know we're completely out of season with these sweeties, but who cares? I like a challenge! Blues and purples seem to dominate these flowers, at least in my mind. Those are fun colors with which to paint so I have no problems with mixing them up. They become much like stained glass in my technique. Sail Away, palette knife oil painting

A different season here -- summer. I long for summer until it gets here. Then it's too hot. Complain, complain, complain! Oh well.

A few years back I visited a college friend in Rhode Island and saw something like "Sail Away" out on the horizon. I'm intrigued by the ocean and by boats. I get very seasick, so just daydreaming about it will have to do. The blues and greens of the water, the full sail of the boat -- I wish I were out there on the boat, having fun!

Red Mountain II, palette knife oil painting

I'm repeating the blog text from February 5th because the story is the same. The location of the painting is close by my previous painting, "Red Mountain I".

Red Mountain is located in the southwestern portion of the state of Colorado. Close by are Ouray, Silverton, and Durango. Mesa Verde, where the Anasazi cliff dwellers lived centuries ago, isn't far from these small towns. It's a fascinating part of the state, one frequented by tourists, but you can still get a sense of solitude.

The infamous Million Dollar Highway is also located nearby. When I was younger and my mother was alive, she told me about the time that a high school basketball team, I believe, was on a bus travelling either to or from a game and the brakes went out. The athletes on the bus had to shift from one side of the bus to the other, in order for the bus to stay on the road, rather than go over the very steep enbankment. It's a harrowing drive the first time you're on this road! Terrifying, as if you are in the passenger seat going south, the only thing you see is "down" -- no shoulder to speak of, just straight down.

've been down to this part of Colorado many times, loving it each time we go. Just so, so beautiful! I hope I've captured a bit of it for you, this time in oil. This the sequel to my other painting, "Red Mountain I".

Snowy Peaks, painting on glass

Here in Colorado, we are living under the cloud of deceit. Mother Nature is playing tricks on us! It is early February and springtime outside? Sixty degrees Fahrenheit. b What gives? It's supposed to be snowing and I can't even blame this on global warming, as, for as long as I can remember (being the native of Colorado that I am), February always has warm spells. The lure, the promise of warmer weather! Spring time beckons. The ground hog was wrong. Well, I know better. We'll be hit again with the flaky white stuff that falls from the clouds above. Winter lasts into April and even May in this gorgeous state, so I dedicate this painting to Mama Nature -- 'cause I know what's really around the corner: snow.

Road to Hana Hibiscus, palette knife oil painting

A number of years ago my husband and I traveled to the island of Maui in the state of Hawaii. What a beautiful location, the Pacific Ocean all around, varying in shades of greens, purples and the blue the color of my mother's eyes, very deep blue. Enchanting place.

We took a very famous road, a drive on the road to Hana. These were the most tropical topical of surroundings, full of wild flowers and foliage. And it was, unfortunately, nauseating! I suffer a lousy malady, have all of my life, called car sickness. Twisting and turning roads do me in. Before I began suffering from this lousy syndrome, however, I was fortunate enough to spot a wild hibiscus growing on the side of the road. I slipped, literally, over to it to inspect it -- the ground was all muddy. I found it to be a beautiful site, though, and here I present it to you. All palate knife, all the time, when it comes to oils, so you can imagine that this one took quite a while to finish!

Worth the Wait: Sunset Over the Loire River (France), oil painting

As I have mentioned in the past, my husband is in the wine business and once in a great while we are able to travel to France or Italy. Several years ago, we were in Amboise, France. We were staying at a hotel that was located within walking distance of the Loire River. I am the patient one when it comes to photography (and little else, unfortunately!). So I perservered, waited alongside my dear love, and along came the most marvelous sunset! Here is the end result for you, and I do think it captures the moment!

Adobe and Crabtree, Santa Fe Spring, pastel painting

There is one simple fact here: I love Santa Fe. I have loved this unique town since 1973, when I lived in New Jersey and my husband and I traveled to the West to visit my relatives and see the sights. The first time I had real green chili, I almost died. Drank a gallon of milk following that episode (okay, so I exaggerate a bit!). Saw adobe, hanging ristras, Canyon Road, Taos reservation. I could go on and on.

My dear friend, Kate, and I traveled to Santa Fe two springs ago and, lo and behold, this lovely crabapple was in full bloom against my beloved adobe. It just seemed to epitomize all the best of this town to me, so it's my visual gift to you.

Papaveri, painting on glass

Papaveri. Coquelicot. Poppy. (Italy. France. U.S.A.) What happy names for cheerful flowers!

Red. Orange. Yellow. Even blue. What bright colors for these amazing little blooms. The blue is a Himalayan poppy, hard to grow in these parts. However, the reds and oranges are commonly seen around Fort Collins. The orange and yellows are reminiscent of California.

No matter what the color, these lovely flowers make me smile. I love, love, love to paint them.

Beautiful Rhododendron, pastel painting

Although I am a Colorado native, having been born in Grand Junction, I have very fond memories of life in New Jersey. I attended a bit of junior high school there and all of high school in Maplewood and college in South Orange. New Jersey has "the Garden State" as its slogan and if you watch the opening shots of "The Sopranos", you might think that someone's got it all wrong, there don't appear to be many gardens on the New Jersey Turnpike! The soil there is rich, dark, and full of good things for plants. I have memories of picking incredible strawberries in the southern part of the state and there are even cranberry bogs down there in south Jersey.

One plant I never appreciated until I returned to Colorado to live was the rhododendron. The foliage is dark green and glossy, not bad to look at but somewhat nondescript, and yet the blooms are exquisite. Rhododendron don't thrive in Colorado. I have no idea what the growth requirements are for them but I don't think I've ever seen one growing here. That's too bad, as the blossoms are beautiful, as I hope you'll see in my artwork, "Beautiful Rhododendron".

Sunsets are one of my specialties when it comes to painting. Sunrises are not. I'm a late to rise and somewhat late to bed sort of person. I usually see sunrises either on the way to a surgery, a birth, or the airport. I see the most spectacular sunsets all the time, living where I do. We live right next to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, so the view is fabulous. I can go outside in the early evening or even just peer out the window from where I paint -- and there it is, something magnificent, something I attempt to document.

The Peacock: Old Bent's Fort, Colorado, Resident, glass painting

The Peacock, Resident of Old Bent's Fort, Colorado, has intriqued me for years. I first saw this resident, quite a noble creature, at Bent's Fort near La Junta, Colorado, about ten years ago. He was strutting his stuff big time! Oooh, love that tail!!!!

Old Bent's Fort is an historical restoration of an actual fort here in the West. It's dry, dusty, but sturdy. There's an actual covered wagon out front and adobe all around. I think it's worth the trip to see, but my daughters, aged 14 and 11 at the time, didn't agree. Maybe next time, huh, kids?

This is a painting on glass, full of luminiscence and vibrancy, but you should really study the close ups to see that. A bit reminiscent of stained glass but this you simply hang on the wall to see.

A Delicate Arch in Utah, palette knife oil painting

I love the landscape of Utah. One of my favorite spots is a location named The Arches. Delicate Arch is maybe the most famous arch in this park -- lots of bright blue skies and red earth in this locale.

I think that YOU should visit Utah! Stay in Moab, drive on into the park -- sit and rest a while or hike around. Bring your hiking boots for the long haul or just sneakers for a short walk. Have fun. This is one phenomenal country to live in, with the wide variety in the terrain and different regions. I'm hooked!

Angry Sunset, palette knife oil painting

In my neck of the woods, sometimes sunsets seem to have emotion. This one appears angry to me -- as if it's been a tough day in Nature and it's just time to end the day for once and for all. I'm reading into this, obviously! But occasionally the clouds just take on a life of their own -- inexplicably, this one I read as pretty intense!

It's all done, and I repeat, all, with palette knives. Brushes and I cannot get along, for some reason. I make mud with brushes! Palette knives are easy to clean and leave purer colors. I must own about 20 different types.

The Gloaming, pastel painting

Have you ever really studied the skies just before dusk? They can be almost mysterious, like something is "in the works". A surprise type of dusk. A few years back, I noticed this phenomenon and asked around about it -- someone told me it was a "gloaming". Sounded reasonable to me, such an odd word.

So here you have it -- I painted it in pastel -- by the way, you don't "draw" in pastel in my world, you "paint" -- I took many classes from a great pastelist, Clive Tyler, someone well on the way to fame!

Waving Poppy, painting on glass

This red poppy is painted directly onto glass, then reversed. So you have a nice, smooth appearance on the outside of the glass and a bit of a hint of the stained glass look, also As is usual with this technique of painting, I've used a variety of specially formulated paints applied directly onto the glass in a combination of both transparent and opaque paints. (You can see a close up of it also on my website, www.KarlaNolan.com).

If you have been following any of my art blogs at all, you know my fondness for poppies (coquelicot in French, papaveri in Italian). They are such darling flowers, very lively and happy looking. If you haven't been following the blogs and continue to do so, you had better get used to seeing these babies! They are among my favorite floral paintings to produce.
