"End of Day Wild Skies" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

I was invited by Meko's Gallery to do a palette knife demonstration over the weekend and I honestly had a wonderful time doing so. Sitting in the window, at an angle that passers by could see in to note what I was doing, I went to town with the recently found favorite palette knife (which I lost only temporarily!), going to the skies for another sunset. Just love those sunsets, cannot get enough, somewhat like what poppies do for me.

""End of Day Wild Skies", 11"x14" palette knife oil painting on panel, $300, s&h to be determined at time of sale, call 970-221-4208 if you want for more information from Meko's Gallery here in Fort Collins, Colorado -- and thank you for looking!

"Plume" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

It seems to me that sometimes clouds take off on their own, drawn upwards by the winds that we cannot see, they are so far up in the atmosphere. That was what was happening the evening I took a reference of photo of resulted in this particular painting. Honestly, this one was a difficult piece to paint -- I didn't want to smear the coral clouds all over the place, I wanted to keep the softness intact and was frustrated at times pulling it together. All in all, though, I'm pretty satisfied with it. Far better in person, naturally! Just waiting for a frame....

"Plume", 16"x12" palette knife oil painting on canvas panel, $380 plus s&h determined at time of sale, Paypal preferred, write me for invoice or more information at KarlaNolan@gmail.com

"Spring Fields of Wyoming" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

I've been in a palette knife mood lately -- and, having just returned from Spring in Montana and Wyoming, was very inspired to do some spring colors on canvas. I have never seen so much green, of all hues, shades, in these two states! Usually I've been through when the skies are bright blue but the earth is more brown or beige. This was quite like Ireland, please do not misunderstand, but it was a bit like the Emerald City in the "Wizard of Oz"! Honestly, I was very surprised at the brightness, the Crayola "spring green" tumbling up and down the hills! Loved it! So here's my homage to the Spring in Wyoming -- and Montana, too!

"Spring Fields of Wyoming", 12"x24" unframed palette knife oil painting on 3/4" gallery wrapped canvas, $495 plus s&h to be determined at time of sale, Paypal preferred, I'll send you an invoice or write me at Karla Nolan@gmail.com for more information or close up photos

Thank you for looking!

"Gentle Sunset" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

A palette knife oil painting, unframed, "Gentle Sunset" is a bit more subdued than some of the sunsets I have painted. It's a 4.5"x12" piece, ready for a frame. The clouds flower along, quiet tones of blues, lavenders, and corals, hinting at a peaceful end to your day. The mountains are almost always present in the paintings, as I do live right next to them and they are an integral part of my every day life.

I just returned home from Wyoming and Montana -- man, it is spring in these two states. I have a wet painting inspired by the rolling hills of Wyoming on the easel and the greens, not my particular favorite of colors, just shimmered. Hopefully you'll get to view it in the next couple of days. A bit of drying time is necessary! And I am doing a palette knife oil painting demonstration at Meko's Gallery, 222 Linden Street, Fort Collins this Saturday afternoon around 1:00 pm -- stop by and visit!

"Gentle Sunset", 4.5"x12" palette knife oil painting, $95 includes s&h in N. America, contact me to Paypal invoice at KarlaNolan@gmail.com and thank you for visiting!

"Springtime = Poppy Time" by Karla Nolan, framed glass painting

ALERT: You are about to view art of a different nature. These are paintings on glass -- that is, painted directly onto glass with specially formulated glass paints. They are always framed for the protection of the glass. The paints often are transparent and sometimes opaque, giving a stained glass appearance under good light. They, like all fine art, should not be hung in direct sunlight. The photographs do not do them justice -- my colors are very vibrant. Close ups are available, just e-mail me for information (see below). In most instances, click on the actual image for an even larger image to view -- you'll see lots of different items such as marbelization, transparent or opaque parts of the work -- try it and see! Commissions are accepted.

Poppies painted onto glass sometimes produce challenges -- I don't want everything to look the same all of the time, so I vary the hues of oranges and reds, change up the backgrounds when I feel it is necessary, marbelize the skies. If I'm not having fun with the painting, enjoying myself as I produce the art work, I feel dissatisfied with the entire process. When making this piece of art, I had a wonderful time -- that's the most important thing to me...life is stressful enough, making pretty things shouldn't be! No guarantees there, but that is my goal, what I strive to achieve.

"Springtime = Poppy Time", 9"x13" measured edge to edge glass, framed in black lacquer, $750 + shipping and handling, Paypal invoice at time of sale -- write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information -- and thank you for looking!

"Plentiful Petunias" by Karla Nolan, framed glass painting

I have, unfortunately, always thought that petunias were the most common flower and, for me, impossible to grow. Now how can a petunia be impossible to grow? You have to deadhead the old fashioned kind, that is picking off the dead or dying flowers so that they won't work at producing seeds and stop blooming. The problem there is that the petunias at the base of the flowers are sticky. I guess I'm a tactile sort or something but I don't like the stickiness of the petunia for some reason. So....I'm just not the best petunia grower. The newer hybrids are easier to deal with, as they are self cleaning.

I'm up in Jackson, Wyoming, right now because I have an art opening this Thursday evening. While walking around looking for a place to have dinner, I saw many beautiful hanging baskets just shining with gorgeous, colorful petunias! So...here is my ode to petunias in Jackson, a visual poem.

"Plentiful Petunias", 8"x10" framed glass painting, $295 includes s&h in N. America, Paypal preferred, click below, or write me for more information at KarlaNolan@gmail.com -- and thanks so much for looking!

"Bougainvillea Blooms" by Karla Nolan, framed glass painting

So, the fascination with bougainvilleas and flowers in general continues. These babies just come in the very hottest, almost neon, colors, making them I spend painting them wonderful. The hot pinks really jump out and not everyone realizes that the vividly colored leaves aren't actually the flowers -- the tiny white flowers, almost 1/4" across, are the true flowers. The leaves are the ornamentation -- I saw these growing several stories high in Rome several years ago -- amazing how they get their thorns out and hang onto the walls. Those thorns also can really hurt your skin and cause an allergic reaction -- I had one a while back. I have grown bougainvillea for some time with success but have had no luck in propagating them, having tried two or three different techniques. Oh well, at least I can paint them and propagate them in that manner!

"Bougainvillea Blooms" 5"x7" framed painting on glass, $135 includes s&h in N. America, write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information; Paypal invoice to be forwarded at time of sale
