"Blue Mist Falling", original watercolor painting

There is a weather phenomeon called "virga" which means wisps of precipitation evaporating before reaching the ground.  I've found that the most interesting time of day for one to observe this is, of course, at sunset!  You know my passion for those early evening skies, don't you?  Here it is, presented as a blue mist, falling, in watercolor.

"Santa Fe Doors: The Bell", matted original watercolor and ink painting

My husband and I are on vacation in California and I am behind in my art blog posts, so here goes, another taste of Santa Fe, doors, adobe and such.  As I recall, the skies were quite blue the day I saw this door, it was a hot and dry day but knowing the way adobe walls are built, good insulation, I knew it would be nice and cool inside the rooms of this building...and it was..  This was actually an outside courtside wall, a small patio was located behind it, then the room in which we stayed.  I don't know the significance of the bell, it was just there, but the whole scene was charming, which is what I remember best about Santa Fe:  the charm and ambience of the city.

"Santa Fe Doors: The Bell", matted watercolor and ink painting, approximately 3.5"x4.5" image in off-white mat to fit 8"x10" frame, $100 includes s/h in continental U.S., click Paypal button below or write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information

"Echinacea Quintet, Cheyenne Spirit", original watercolor painting

The end of summer/beginning of fall is an adventure in the flower garden.  I saw this Cheyenne Spirit echinacea at nearby Gardens On Spring Creek, an horticultural paradise in the center of Fort Collins, Colorado (which is the home of Colorado State University, known for the horticultural program at the college).  Every time I visit the Gardens I am inspired to paint and plant more.  We have many sorts of flowers in our own garden but it's hard to believe that so many other varieties would also grow for us.  It's change from sunny to shady in the back yard, the growth of the trees and bushes has been rampant but I have the great fortune of being able to walk through Spring Creek and learn even more about the floral kingdom.  So lucky!

"Icelandic Poppy", framed and matted original watercolor painting

My dear friend, Meg, owns EsScentuals, a unique boutique here in Fort Collins, Colorado.  She displays my flower paintings, be they in pastel, oil, or now watercolor.  I recently brought in several new pieces of my favorite flower:  poppies, coquelicot, papaveri.  The languages may differ but the sounds are bright and happy.  Should you be interested in purchasing this 10"x8" (mat size) work for $195, please call her at 970-484-7862 or visit EsScentuals when you are in town at 142 South College, in the heart of downtown.  Tell her Karla sent you!

"Gold in Those Red Hills", original watercolor painting

A little more experimentation on the old watercolor paper!  I really enjoyed painting this one -- "gold in them thar hills" sounds a bit tacky but -- it just reminded me so much of the southwestern part of the U.S., part Colorado, Utah, Arizona and so on.  You just never know what lies in the red rocks, hills, cliffs, with the turquoise skies overhead.  To me these are the quintessential Western colors of our terrain out here.  Happy, happy!

"Sunset Gold", original watercolor painting

Ah, more watercolor experimentation with the skies, the sunsets in particular.  Don't all sunsets have a bit of magic in them?  They shift so quickly, sometimes they are breathtaking, literally!  November happens to be my favorite month to observe them, just before starting dinner, closing out another day.  (The lower picture is a close up view.)

"Busy in The Poppy Fields", watercolor painting

This watercolor painting has multiple layers of colors on it, tons of flowers, too!  Just imagine how active it must be for a flower to emerge from the earth, other plants surrounding it, blue skies overhead.  May is just the best time for the European poppies in France and Italy and we are delighted to have all different sorts in our own garden during our summer months.  Lovin' those poppies!

"Busy in The Poppy Fields", watercolor painting, 8.25"x11.5", $150 includes s/h in continental U.S., click Paypal button below or write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information
