"Quartet" by Karla Nolan, original watercolor and ink painting on paper

I feel that you can see the past, present and future in this poppy painting.  Fitting for the season, eh?  The seeds have formed from the flower having bloomed, ready to throw to the next generation.  The poppies are in various stages of bloom and there are a couple of buds just ready to burst open!  Ah, Mama Nature strikes again!

"Quartet", 9.5"x7.5" watercolor and ink (unmatted), $115 which includes s/h in continental U.S., contact me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information, Paypal accepted

"Poppy Field Near Trevi, Italy" by Karla Nolan, original watercolor and ink painting on paper

From the moon to the poppy fields again (my last blog was a lunar blog) -- we were near this field but above it when we first saw it, standing near a wall in Trevi, Italy.  Visiting in May, the delightful red flowers were everywhere and we drove all around so I could get some reference photos.  Luckily we were successful in navigating to this field, so here you go, some more poppies from me to you!

"Flying to The Moon" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas

Some more lunar fun.  This is a sizeable painting, perfect for over that sofa that needs freshening.  And who says a moon can't be pink?  Hints of waterfalls, obvious mountains, a bit more rugged terrain maybe?  Drifty atmosphere in the sky....and so on.

"Poppies at Paestum (Italy)" by Karla Nolan, original watercolor and ink painting

Located in the southern part of Italy are ancient Greek ruins and, what else, poppies growing near them!  They are a marvelous site to see, the combination of blue skies, cypress, the actual Greek ruins surrounded by field stone walls, and the bright red poppies, seemingly unfazed by history long gone by.  Visit this extraordinary site if you can, you won't regret it.

"Carmine Hills" by Karla Nolan, original watercolor painting on paper

You know, sometimes simpler just seems to be better and in the case of this watercolor painting, it seems to work!  Almost pure color, although at a close up view you'll see different hues and shades of reds.  Ah, I just love color!

"Vermilion Hills" by Karla Nolan, watercolor on paper

"Poppies for D" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting on paper

Yes, more poppies!  Experimental for me, as watercolor always is and will be (hard to control the water part of it!), I started this painting in Rome and finished it in Fort Collins, having a great time in the meantime!  More coming, as I really do enjoy playing with the colors and the ink outlines.

"Seaside Moon" by Karla Nolan, 8"x10" palette knife oil painting

Many moons ago (no pun intended!), I visited my dear friend Missy in Newport, Rhode Island.  We went to a golf club for dinner that had quite the view, very reflective as the sun descended over the water.  This is my attempt to capture a sliver of time during that sundown.  I like it.  I hope you do, also.  By the way, I do not play golf, have no ambition to do so, as I know how my right arm would hate me, it already does from painting!

"Lilac Skies, Full Moon and Mountains" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

A return (again!) to the Lunar-tique series.  I had a very difficult time capturing the colors of the sky while photographing this particular artwork but finally feel that they are representative of this piece.  It's always hard to get exactly the right shades for the skies and incorporate other elements accurately but I didn't go for accuracy with this moon.  I prefer the imagination!

"Near Najac, France" by Karla Nolan, watercolor painting (unmatted)

It was May of 2013, a very difficult time in life as my father had passed away.  We escaped to France.  May is poppy month and we were fortunate enough to be able to view the many coquelicot fields around this little village, Najac.  Seeing these happy hills of red soothed my shattered nerves a bit.  Looking back, I recall the emotions of losing a beloved person, those feelings never leave.  But France helped.

"Papaveri Trio" by Karla Nolan, matted watercolor and ink painting

Yup, still at it with the watercolor and ink paintings.  My neck hates me, though.  I am more accustomed to standing, hopefully straight, and painting with a palette knife on canvas.  I just have been enjoying this media, remembering my dad's passion for painting with watercolor and ink, not the same subject matter, but the memories are great.  And you know me, I can't get enough of bright red poppies!

"Italy: Cypress and Poppies" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting

Fond memories of Italy again, irresistible!  I cannot speak the Italian language except for basic phrases (grazie, prego, bellissima) and, while I can remember an occasional phrase for a short while, I have all but given up learning this Latin based lingo.  However, my friend Patrizia is encouraging me to learn a bit more and I'm enjoying a book or two written by Tim Parks (an English gentleman who has lived and worked in Italy for 30 years) in which I can pick up a phrase here and there.  The moral of this story:  (1) never give up on learning something new and (2) visit Italy, for goodness sakes, do you know what you are missing?

"Roman Holiday Poppies" by Karla Nolan, matted watercolor and ink painting

There's no better time than the present, or so I thought while staying recently in Italy.  I picked up those watercolors and ink pens, put my mind to it, and produced these poppies.  Quite a switch from my recent lunar mindset, eh?  What fun I had!

"Coral Moon Behind Mountains" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

Wow!  Talk about synchronicity and timing and such!  The blood moon that occurred in recent days is all over the media and, amazingly, I am still in my lunar-tique phase, as you may have noticed from recent posts.  This painting is especially experimental, with the unusual lower mountains.  Challenging to paint, I'll say, but I am enjoying the final result.  What do you think?

"Moonrise" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas

Several months ago I was contacted by a woman who had located my artworks on-line.  She had looked for some time for an artist to fulfill her vision of a moon rising over mountains and she found me!  Well, to be honest, I was a bit skeptical, as she informed me that she didn't want a lot of color in this painting.  I wasn't sure I could go without a lot of color, as that is sort of my trademark, but I thought about it and decided to stretch my boundaries.  We stayed in touch and gradually worked through quite the process, as it was also the largest painting I have done.  It was thrilling to have this experience and you might have noticed, if you read my blogs, that I am still in the throes of being obsessed by moons rising over the horizon!  Thank you, Deborah, this has been such a worthwhile and fun effort!

"Lady Moon" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

Another painting in my "Lunar" Series, this has a more feminine quality to it, hence the name "Lady Moon".  I'm experimenting with different colors and palette knife styles, in addition to playing with various media to hasten drying or remove paint.  Isn't life just one big experiment, in some sense?  Not to get too heavy here....

"My Very Own Moonrise" by Karla Nolan, gallery wrapped oil painting

Well, it has been quite the summer, most unusual.  I'll spare you the details.  I have returned to painting finally and am writing my first blog since late May.

A client contacted me a number of months ago to ask if I would paint a three foot by four foot moonrise painting.  I was astonished, as I have never painted such a large work, but gathered steam and enthusiasm and completed the chore at hand with great delight.  It was a wonderful experience stepping out of my comfort zone, as much of the painting was different hues and toes of grays.  I'm the color lady, normally!  Suffice it to say, I learned a lot!  I'll be posting a jpeg of that painting soon. (This is the first of the "Lunar Series" I'm showing.)

I was so happy with the result that my husband and I decided that we needed a moonrise painting, also.  It's been quite a while since I attempted anything for our own house, but here is the result.  I'm happy!  No, it's not for sale.  Sorry!

"Happy" by Karla Nolan, framed watercolor painting

"Happy" is a small framed in gold, matted in off-white, watercolor painting of just that, a very happy red poppy.  One of my favorite subjects to paint, I have seen a few red oriental poppies blooming around town.  It has been so rainy, so wet, so soggy here, I'm amazed that they've dared to open, sans sun!

Should you be interested in purchasing this 7"x5" (mat/framed size) work for $95, please call Meg at 970-484-7862 or visit EsScentuals when you are in town at 142 South College, in the heart of downtown Fort Collins, Colorado.  Tell her Karla sent you!

Thanks for viewing my art!  Greetings from Fort Collins, Colorado

"Solo" by Karla Nolan, unframed oil pastel painting

I don't know if you've noticed but SPRING IS HERE!  Hooray!  That means iris and I really like iris.  So does my husband, we have them planted all over the garden.  This is my second oil pastel painting and I'm pleased with how it turned out, although there is so much to learn in this medium.  Whew!  Art means never stop learning..............that doesn't sound right, but you get the idea, right?

"Santa Fe Doors: Yellow Door in Wooded Area" by Karla Nolan, matted watercolor painting

A brief return to my matted, watercolor Santa Fe doors series. I thought that a yellow door might cheer me up with all of this wretched rainy weather here in Colorado.  Adobe and yellow wood, with woods behind.  A bit mysterious, don't you think?  Especially in Santa Fe with all of the red and turquoise around.  Out of the ordinary.

"Another Look at Red Mountain" by Karla Nolan, unframed oil pastel painting

My first attempt at painting with oil pastels.  A repeat subject.  Red Mountain the southwestern part of the state of Colorado.  I painted with soft pastels for years and occasionally yearn to return to them.  However, oil pastels beckoned because we were going on vacation and they were easier to haul.  Yet another experiment for me.  And since I am crazy over this particular subject, it was a fun and very educational experience.  I just love Colorado!

"Twilight Over the Rocky Mountains" by Karla Nolan, miniature unframed palette knife oil painting

A little gem of a painting, miniature, actually, this is to me the quintessential Rocky Mountain/Colorado sunset.  I have always been struck at how the mountains are a dark silhouette while the remains of the sun and the successive colors over that, then the various blues of the skies are layered.  I love Colorado!

"Just Sailing Along" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

We have just returned from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and please keep in mind, I am not used to seeing so much water around us!  We are happily landlocked in northern Colorado but being near the H2O is quite refreshing and enjoyed our time there.  I painted this painting on glass some time ago and thought I'd show it to you here, in honor of all the blues that we saw while on vacation!  Best seen in person, of course, as are most paintings on glass.

"Last Glimpse of the Sun" by Karla Nolan unframed palette knife oil painting

"Clouds of Coral" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Being a sunset fan, I have found that there are so many colors in the clouds and they change so quickly, sometimes one has to make choices in what to represent.  Coral colors in the clouds seem to move through the skies fast, they're hard to catch with a camera for a reference photograph.  So, what does an artist do?  She uses her artistic license, of course!  If you can, enlarge this painting, as you'll see many colors in it that could be missed at first glance.

"Embers Sunset" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Okay, I'll admit it, I have never seen this scene!  I have quite the imagination, huh?  I can just envision a volcanic exploding over a mountain range, although it's a scary thought, I'll admit.  Always having fun with the paints.
