"Fancy Dance" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink

Okay, I'll be up front.  I do not plan to sell this painting.  It was extremely time consuming to paint, full of detail, which is not my usual modus operandus.  I went to the Northern Colorado Pow Wow a couple of weeks ago with my husband and then with my young granddaughter.  I love a pow wow.  The color, the spirit, the dancing, the drumming, nothing is quite like it.  So I attempted to capture a second of the fancy dance, I was diligent in my effort, and I am so happy with it!  Yaay!

"Southwest Panorama in Reds" by Karla Nolan, watercolor on paper

There is something about the colors of the cliffs, hills, mesas, and mountains in the Southwest United States that is so intriguing to me.  There is no one shade of red involved, instead there are underlying purples, oranges, yellows, browns.  Usually there is a bright blue sky with incoming storms fully in view when observing the clouds.  I love it here in Colorado and also seeing the view in Utah, New Mexico and Arizona.

"Vernazza Below the Cinque Terre Trail" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

This painting isn't for sale.  It's my gift to my husband for his birthday.  He took me to this fabulous place a few years back.  I thought I was prepared.  No intention to hike, no thanks, that's not my thing!  Once we were there, however, it was obvious we had to make a trek on the trail, at least some of it.  One can take trains from town to town, also, but to catch the best view, the dirt trail (and some mud) would be involved.  Unfortunately, I had not planned for this!  I didn't bring any sort of hiking shoe or sneakers, so I did a bit of slipping and sliding.  But I got some excellent photos and ended up having a grand time!  (Especially when it was over, a bright memory!)  Ah, Italia!

"Viewing Vernazza From the Cinque Terre Trail" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting

Hiking along the Cinque Terre trail in Italy was quite the adventure, especially since I had not anticipated this activity and did not bring the proper footwear.  I'm not much of a hiker but I do enjoy a good view. I surely got one from here!

"Spring Has Sprung" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

This is a bit of revamp of an earlier painting.  We have very little luck with forsythias in our yard, never have figured out why.  Our neighbors to the east of us have had good luck this year, so I was inspired by their fortune.  Spring days appear to be here.  Finally.

"Solo Act: Red Indian Paintbrush" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

You may have noticed that I love the color red, the energy, the vibrancy, the fire.  And so on.  I painted this Indian Paintbrush a few years back and was recently contacted by some folks in California interested in purchasing it.  I enthusiastically agreed, of course!  It is going to a good home and I am so happy!

"My Iris" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

Okay, I'm jumping the gun on spring, I admit it.  In fact, it is snowing again as I type, heading into April.  The green foliage has emerged from the ground but the iris buds are not ready to peek out yet.  I'm more than ready to see this iris plant once more.  Enough with the snow!

"Nestled In the Italian Hills" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

Amazing to me but true, this is my 600th blog post.  That is simply incredible, I didn't realize I had been writing and showing my art works this much but I must say, this fact makes me pretty happy!  The travels with my husband and my children have inspired me greatly and, of course, the skies and the flowers have contributed mightly, as well!

"Mighty Masada (Israel)" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

It was a once in a lifetime trip for me, I'd always wanted to go to Israel and "see the sights", see old friends, see distant cousins.  We were able to travel to Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, the Upper and Lower Galilee, the Dead Sea, and Masada.  You simply must go if you can, we felt safe the entire time and it was truly magnificent.  The story of Masada is incredible, I'd suggest you learn about it if you can.

"Poppies Among the Greek Ruins at Paestum" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

Several years ago we travelled to Italy and visited a more southern region.  It took a while to reach Paestum, but the drive was worthwhile, as we were able to walk around ancient Greek ruins, still standing to a degree.  And, yes, of course, there were the wild red poppies!  What a delight!

"Coalescence" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

I enjoy the late part of the day, just before dusk, especially when viewing anything relating to water (reservoir, lake, river, stream, ocean).  The way the light of the sky bounces off the water is especially intriguing and putting all of the hue together makes for a great challenge.  I hope I've met it in the painting.

"Dusk In The Forest" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

The most evocative time of the day for me, I love the sometime quietly colorful skies at dusk.  Imagine walking up the road in the forest at this lovey time of day and you can see my vision.  This is a small painting that is ready to pop into that frame and put on the wall!

"Sorbet Sunset" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

The dark silhouette of the foothills and mountains, the warmth leaving the skies, nightfall is ahead.  What does any of this have to do with sorbets, the light treat between meal courses?  Nothing!  Nothing at all!  I was just inspired by the colors of the sorbets I recall having at a few fancy dinners.  (Wink!)

"Golden Hour" by Karla Nolan, watercolor painting on paper

Some people say don't use metallic gold in your paintings, but I disagree with that notion.  Rarely is it my go to, but in this case it captured exactly what I wanted, just a hint of shimmer in the late day.  The "Golden Hour".

"Dusk Quietly Approaches" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

Anyone who has followed me on-line knows how I am fascinated by the skies, especially at sunset.  I had painted this particular scene many years ago from a reference photo with a bit of a different composition.  Ten years later or so, here it is once again in a larger format, some different hues, and I find myself just as fascinated as ever as the sun goes down.

"Memories of Maui" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on canvas

It has been some years since we went to Hawaii and I was interested in viewing the sunset.  What a sunset it was, the sky on fire, the island across from us dark, the faint glimmer of reflections in the deep waters.  Unlike any other sunset I've seen, this is my interpretation.

"Crimson Fields" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting

After a small hiatus, I am back.  Life can get pretty busy sometimes, but I have a bright outlook!  This painting is just a sentimental remembrance of the endless poppy fields which I love so much, what, a trip down memory lane in the fields of Italy or France in the springtime!

"Crimson Fields", 8.25"x11.5" watercolor and ink (unmatted), $150 which includes s/h in continental U.S., contact me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information, Paypal accepted
