"Windswept Indian Paintbrush" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

Oops, at it again, I guess, that painting on glass and all!  This is my take on the famous Indian Paintbrush flowers, a flowering plant indigenous to the western U.S., always a delight to see blooming alongside the road, on hikes, climbing up a mountain....I've seen them recently in Colorado and Wyoming and they occur in varying colors, primarily red but sometimes with an orange hue.

"Windswept Indian Paintbrush", 6"x6" (measured edge to edge glass) in frame shown, $125 includes s/h in continental U.S., Paypal accepted, click button below or write me for more information at KarlaNolan@gmail.com

"Purple Mountains, Amber Waves", 8"x10.5" original watercolor painting

I have always loved the song, "America, The Beautiful" and thought it might be an appropriate gesture for this special week, Thanksgiving and all, to salute this wonderful country in which we live.  I believe that the song was inspired by Pike's Peak here in Colorado and written by Katharine Lee Bates in 1893.

"Chilis of New Mexico", framed painting on glass

Recently I've had renewed interest in my framed paintings on glass from a few Daily Painters website visitors, so I thought I'd acquaint you with my "Chilis of New Mexico" -- yes, hot and spicy, habenero, Anaheim, Poblano, jalapeno -- you name it, any of them could be in this painting!  Unfortunately, try as I may, the heat of the chilis wipes me out, it's an embarrassment to see!  Oh well, I still love the Mexican foods!

"Chilis of New Mexico", 9"x12" (measured edge to edge glass) in black frame, $325 includes s/h in continental U.S., Paypal accepted, click button below or write me for more information at KarlaNolan@gmail.com

"Green Hills of Ireland", 9.5"x13" original watercolor painting

There are so many shades and hues of green in Ireland, I don't believe that one could name them all.  Accompanied by the grey clouds overhead, there are subtle, rolling hills, walls of stone separating lots, quaint old houses surrounded by bushes and trees, wildflowers growing in the green (!) meadows.  What glorious memories I have!

"See the Sea Anemones", original watercolor painting

Well, one might say I'm in uncharted waters!  I couldn't resist taking immense artistic license and stirring up the oceans, rivers, lakes, estuaries a bit -- I'm combining all water creatures in a few original watercolor paintings and am having a blast doing so.  The world is one big place and "they" say that the oceans are the new frontier!  (The lower picture is a close up....)

"Santa Fe Doors: Arch Over Blue", matted watercolor and ink painting

Another in my Santa Fe doors series.  Painting these doors have had me wanting to visit this charming city once again but with the early winter snows, I think I'll wait until it warms up a bit!  I believe that Santa Fe's altitude is even higher than ours is in Fort Collins!  It can get bitterly cold even though it's about seven hours south of us!  Go figure...

"Santa Fe Doors: Arch Over Blue", matted watercolor and ink painting, approximately 3.5"x4.5" image in off-white mat to fit 8"x10" frame, $100 includes s/h in continental U.S., click Paypal button below or write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information

"Trees In Change", original watercolor painting

Well, we quickly went from fabulous Fall to wild Winter here in norther Colorado!  Whew!  Why do changing leaves just need to be red, yellow, orange or brown?  Why not aqua or turquoise?  Huh?  Had fun, fun and more fun with this one -- check out the real leaves pressed into the paper....

"Pink Water Lily", original watercolor painting

We live in what I call "a little slice of Paradise", Fort Collins, Colorado.  This sweet town has all sorts of horticultural delights including a huge test garden, Colorado State University Horticultural Department, multitudes of greenhouses and gardens.  But one of my favorite spots to visit is The Gardens on Spring Creek, less than two miles from our house.  This past summer I did a solo tour through the Gardens and found this sweet pink water lily, just floating along.  Here it is for you to ponder.  I enjoyed painting it and learned a few lessons about watercolor painting as the painting progressed.  It is one tough medium!

"Blue Mountain Water Falls", original watercolor painting

Water is so difficult to paint, in my opinion. I inadvertently started painting a waterfall while playing with watercolors.  I did not mean to start this, but, what the heck, why not proceed?  I rather like it --- I don't know if there are mountains named "Blue Mountain" here in Colorado, but there is one now -- on paper, anyway!

"Hot Hot Hot", original matted watercolor painting

We were in northern California recently, specifically Sonoma.  What a sweet town, you should visit it, really!  I slid into the alley off the main square and returned to see the bouganvillea I saw a few years back.  Still blooming away, still impossible to paint, but easy to photograph.  So, my approach here is catch the color.....that's what it's all about, isn't it?  "Life is short, use color!" is my motto.  What's yours?

"Colorado: Hidden Mountain Gems", original watercolor painting

Playing around with watercolors again.  I've seen shows on the Travel Channel and the Weather Channel about gem hunting and have been intrigued by the topic.  There are prospectors hunting for aquamarines on Mount Antero here in Colorado.  I think they are unusually brave, as this state is known for sudden changes in weather -- old saying, "if you wait 15 minutes, it'll change" is true.  I don't think I'd make a good prospector, honestly, but hopefully you can envision all the gems in Mama Earth, inspired by the colors in my painting.  It was fun!
