Inspired by J.M.W. Turner, Georgia O'Keefe, Massimo Cruciani, Edgar Degas and many others, I am pleased to be an artist painting in oils (palette knife and brush), soft pastels, paintings on glass and now watercolors. My landscapes are driven by my travel memories. My flowers are inspired by the actual thing -- I once had a pressed and dried flower business. And my skies -- my hero is Turner. What more can I say? My motto: "Life is short, use color!" I hope you enjoy my show.

Pingree Park Dusk II, Palette Knife Oil Painting
Have you ever been to Pingree Park? It's in our Colorado Rocky Mountains, in the northern part of the state. There was a terrible forest fire there a few years back, but the mountains are returning to normal. New growth abounds. The sunsets there are exquisite, as you are up on a peak and can see the sky 360 degrees. Enjoy this one, okay?
"Pingree Park Dusk II", oil on canvas panel, 11"x14" $300 sold unframed, s&h charges determined at time of sale, Paypal encouraged

Sky View, painting on glass
Here's my holiday gift to you -- Christmas, Chanukah, New Year's....whatever! I recently painted a large sunset on glass -- not an easy task, mind you! Very trying. But I feel that I captured a dusk that is typical of Colorado....along the Front Range. It was a time consuming piece, simply framed so as not to steal the show from the painting.
"Sky View", 18x24" sold framed as shown, $1200 + S&H charges to be determined at time of sale.

Blue Skies of Colorado, painting on glass
There's something about this state -- it has amazingly blue skies. Some days are completely without clouds, particularly in the summer mornings. Of course, you must know my passion for sunsets...but I never take the blue of the sky for granted (having lived in New Jersey and Missouri).

Poppy Blues by Karla Nolan...art sale ends soon!
More of the Himalayan blue poppies, on glass! What a fun concept, being able to grow a blue poppy. Unfortunately, this won't happen in Colorado, at least where I live, it's way too cold! This sweet bunch of poppies can be yours, framed already, if you order today! It measures 5"x7" edge to edge glass. And a close up can be seen on this website!
As mentioned above, my art sale continues....As you must know, art sales, as well as all sales, appear to be on the decline at this time... Therefore, I'm announcing on my blogs that all of the artworks shown on my website are discounted 25% through December 15th, 2008. My glass paintings are sold framed as noted and pastels, along with palette knife oil paintings, are sold unframed, but are all original paintings. Shipping prices will need to be determined per order, however, as each piece of art weighs a different amount.

Bright Poppy (painting on glass)...art sale still on!
Here is a perfectly happy specimen of an oriental poppy for you! It is painted onto glass and then reversed, so the smooth side of the glass faces you. It arrives already framed in a lovely gold frame. And it's a good deal! (Don't forget, I'm having a sale for 13 more days! See below, please.) My glass paintings are both painted with transparent and opaque paints, formulated specially for glass. You can also see a close up of "Bright Poppy" here or on my website at www.KarlaNolan.com (works/glass paintings).

Iris Field, glass painting...and the sale continues!
Recently painted, this is my ideal springtime artwork. Snow has finally arrived here in the Rocky Mountain region, ugh, and I long for spring. You'd think that being a Colorado native, I'd love that silly white stuff from the sky but I truly am one for more moderate temperatures -- hence my irises today. Living in a snow globe sounds like fun but the freshness, the chirps of the baby birds, the crocuses and then daffodils, followed by irises, are more my cup of tea.

Let's Go To The Beach (...and the sale continues...)
Some years ago, my husband and I went to Hawaii. It was most impressive -- all shades of blue and green in the ocean waters. While on Maui, I saw this scene -- splashing waves, clear blue skies with bits of clouds bopping around -- just a gorgeous place to be! This is my Thanksgiving gift to myself -- a brief bit of time at the beach, painted directly on glass! I hope you enjoy it!

"Wine Before Its Time", painting on glass
This painting was not only excruciatingly time consuming to paint, it was difficult to name! As you must know by now from reading my blogs, my husband has been in the wine business for almost 25 years and I am quite the spoiled woman as a result. I thought I would paint this in honor of the lovely grapes and all that they portend -- from the early spring when the leaves are first appearing to the autumn when the grapes are large and hanging, full of flavor, on the vines, as the leaves begin turning and dropping in winter.
I hope you enjoy this journey with me through the vineyards. See you next week!

"Sweet Heart", painting on glass
Boy, it has been forever and a day since I've blogged! I apologize for that. Due to economic necessity, I had to move my entire art studio from one town back to my house and that took approximately a week, not actually including the set up of my studio in the house (which is tiny, tiny, and tiny!) But....I'm baaaaaaaaaaack!
This is "Sweet Heart", named for the tiny roses, although the rose from which I drew the inspiration was a large one. Go figure. I drew it freehand then added colors, of course. The simplicity of the design is what I like the most about this piece of art. Red roses are every woman's favorites, at least I assume that is so.
Do enjoy this day -- at least we have the liberty to vote -- and the responsibility, too!

More Morning Glories from Half Moon Bay, painting on glass
Here are some more morning glories. They are just the loveliest, most delicate looking flowers! As they fade, the colors change. The leaves are deeply carved with hints of yellow in them. And they are a blast to paint! Gotta love them.
I've been working on a red rose on a glass painting. Tres difficile. Fun. Challenging. Hopefully I can post this flower later in the week.

Sky Aglow, painting on glass
Do you like stained glass? I do and always have. During our last visit to New York City, we went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I wanted to dash off to the Tiffany Collection but it was closed. Unbelievable! Such bad timing on our part!
Still, I have been there before and can truly appreciate his genius with stained glass. This painting has a stained glass quality to it, more so than some of my other paintings on glass. As you can imagine, color is of high importance to me, so I'll give you that this particular sunset is a bit hotter than some real sunsets, but it was fun making Nature shine!

November Mountain Sunset, painting on glass
This is the "November Mountain Sunset". You might wonder, why show this now? Well, the Daylight Savings Time is about to end. For some reason, government has determined that we've had enough daylight for a bit, time to live in darkness. Or so it seems! The highlights of November are two-fold for me: Thanksgiving, which I have always enjoyed, and sunsets. I can go outside and catch an amazing sunset from my front door, literally. Hence, this painting on glass. By the way, the medium is definitely the message on this one -- it ruled! Indigo Iris, palette knife oil painting
Here is a slightly older painting of another love, the iris. This one is indigo in color and painted with only a palette knife. You know my history of wars between the brushes and me! It's a very small piece but painted with love. Every once in a while I like to practice what would be considered miniatures. I feel like they're great practice for the larger paintings to come.

Morning Glories of Half Moon Bay, painting on glass
These are the morning glories I saw in Half Moon Bay in California. What beauties they were, a delight to see! Very cheery, although something of an overcast day. The morning glories on Gibraltar were far darker blue, with a soft stripe of red in them. The lilacs and purples in these intrigued me and I actually abstracted them somewhat.
Greens in the leaves are difficult for me, so my plan is always to have fun with them. Marbelize them, lighten or darken them, make a nice contrast to the actual flower or petals.
Enjoy your weekend! And the rest of autumn, for winter's just around the bend, at least here in Colorado.

The Himalayan Blues, painting on glass
We live in a part of Colorado that gets very, very cold in the winter. Sometimes the temperature drops to twenty degrees below zero, Fahrenheit. Why do I mention this? Here's why: I cannot grow this poppy, the Himalayan blue poppy. I find this to be completely frustrating, loving poppies as I do. I can grow red, orange, yellow, and salmon colored poppies, but not the blue.
So what are my options? Painting them on glass, of course! I hope you enjoy viewing them.

Salmon Poppy Trio, painting on glass
Gotta love those poppies! We started growing some salmon poppies a couple of years ago and I eagerly anticipate their blooms. They are just so lovely! The colors seem to change with the light, naturally, and the centers are a deep burgundy as opposed to the center of the red poppies which are more of a deep purple.
I hope you enjoy these flowers as much as I do. I'm hoping to make an attempt at painting onto glass some Himalayan blue poppies in the near future. Now, that should be fun! Thanks for looking.

Wild Oleander in the Foothills of Spain, painting on glass
This painting on glass took on its own life. Oleander are poisonous plants (if eaten) that grow wild not only in Spain but in warm climates such as California, where I saw them just a week ago. They are quite exotic looking, at least to my eye, and come in varying colors. My favorite colors are the hot pinks.
We were in Spain in 1998 and my husband wanted to go to a famous cave. I opted out of touring the cave and instead did a short hike around the rocky and dry foothills. I was so amazed at the site of the wild oleander shrubs -- they never left my mind.
Here in the Rocky Mountain foothills, just several hundred yards away from our house, I see some wild flowers but nothing like the oleander. So I present my version of them to you on glass. They are both opaque and iridescent, still have something of a stained glass quality to them and yet are somewhat abstract. I hope you enjoy this artwork as much as I do and did painting it.

Red Poppies, Lavender Skies, painting on glass
I've always like the combination, hot as it is, of red and purple. It's anything but subtle, but then most of my artwork tends to be colorful. Hopefully that's an indication of my personality! My husband is of the idea that we paint our emotional personalities -- some are dark, some are perfectionistic, some of subdued, my art is color, color, and more color! Can't help it, it's who/what I am, I guess.
Anyway....poppies continue to inspire me. While in California last week, I enjoyed the bright oranges of the California poppies occasionally seen along the roads. It would be great to see a blue Himalayan poppy, but that hasn't happened yet. So I'll pretty much stick to painting the bright reds that are so vibrant and lively.
Have a good day!

Mountain Moon Glow, painting on glass
Years ago we were in the Rocky Mountains for a brief vacation. I went outside and, lo and behold, the moon was vibrantly shining in the slightly cloudy sky, a haze of deep blues and purples. This is my take on that delightful night.
I've noticed that as I plan and then paint, I go back in time, in a sweet manner, go back to my memories of fun and sentimental times. That is one of the most joyful aspects of being an artist.

Gibraltan Morning Glory, painting on glass
Back from the Bear State, California. Had a great time! Took lots of reference photos. The one that I'm most interested in is of a morning glory grouping. This is why: Years ago, my husband and I went to Spain and, while there, also went to Gibraltar. That's the English part of Spain, actually. I realize that the English own that spot of land, and it is truly a spot, very tiny, but you are surrounded by Spain. Anyway, I saw the most beautiful morning glory there, very deep blue. I painted it on glass, as you can see.
Since painting it, I've wanted to paint more, as it was an adventure to paint it. However, I cannot for the life of me grow morning glories, try as I may. So I seek them out for the reference photo and found some beauties. You'll get to see them in the near future, hopefully! See you again this week!

The Four Irises: The Last Iris, painting on glass
Sadly, this is the last iris of the four. It was a beautiful, deep colored iris with iridescence and luminosity. This iris almost glittered in the sunlight but had deep undertones, also.
As mentioned before, irises are difficult to paint. They wind and furl all over the place, so immediately they're a challenge, then add in their shadows and varying hues! Oy vei!
I hope you have enjoyed my little iris display -- I'm off to California to seek more fodder for artwork and drink some wine, eat some food and get a breather from regular life. See you in about a week or so!
For my website, you'll need to go to "Works/Glass Paintings/The Four Irises" for the complete view of the artwork. For my other art blogs, just look below.

The Four Irises: Iris Number Three, painting on glass
This is a dainty iris. Almost a flirty iris, the way the petal waves to you. I've noticed that when driving by fields of iris, they look so uniform. Stop, bend down, really look at the individual irises, they are so unique in form from one another....it's the old "stop and smell the roses" routine only here it's "stop and check out the irises" instead!
Tomorrow, the last of the four irises. See you then.

"The Four Irises: Second Part", painting on glass
This is actually a bit of fun for me. Separating out the irises from one another, I like this one best.
You don't see too many straight lines in nature, but this particular yellow iris had a fold that, looking straight on, appeared to be a perfectly level line! That was an unusual line for me to paint without it looking silly. Hopefully I succeeded.

I feel that this is one of my best glass paintings so far. A difficult process, quite tedious and time consuming, but also fun and enjoyable. Especially when it works!
